Brewers one-time All-Star pitcher needs dreaded Tommy John surgery

One former All-Star pitcher is now facing an uphill battle to continue his MLB career.

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reported on Friday that Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Wade Miley will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. Miley will reportedly rehab for the next 10 to 12 months and then decide whether to resume his career.

Miley did express confidence on Friday though that he would ultimately be able to return.

“I’ve always said I want to go out on my own [terms],” Miley said, per McCalvey. “I still feel like I’ve got more in the tank.”

Miley, now 37 years old, was an All-Star back in 2012 and has pitched 14 MLB seasons for eight different teams. He had a resurgence last season with the Brewers as well, going 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA over 25 starts.

But Miley had battled through shoulder and elbow issues in recent years and posted a 6.43 ERA in his first two starts this season before going on IL with left elbow inflammation. Miley has now been diagnosed with a torn UCL in the elbow and will have Tommy John surgery in the hopes of returning for his age-38 season in 2025. For the Brewers, who are off to an excellent 16-8 start to the year, this is the latest unfortunate injury blow to one of their pitchers.
