Rain delay was called at the worst time possible in White Sox-Cardinals game

Saturday’s matchup between the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals was set for an epic finish right up until nature interfered.

The White Sox led the Cardinals 6-5 with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo. The scenario was basically the picture-perfect ending fans would want from a baseball game.

The weather, however, was far from picturesque as rain began pouring down hard on the field.

Before White Sox relief pitcher John Brebbia and Cardinals batter Nolan Gorman could settle things at the plate, home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor called for a rain delay.

Play resumed three hours later with the stands at Busch Stadium all but empty. White Sox reliever Tanner Banks and Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera replaced Brebbia and Gorman, respectively.

What was shaping up to be a riveting finish ended in an anti-climactic manner. Banks struck out Herrera on an 88-mph changeup that appeared to be well off the plate.

The White Sox led the Cardinals 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th, with 2 outs, the bases loaded, and an 0-1 count.

Then the game went into a 3-hour rain delay.
