Insider reveals massive update on Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo

It looks like the Las Vegas Raiders won't need to convince Tom Brady to reconsider his retirement, after all. 

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t Nick Shook) reported Tuesday afternoon during an on-air segment that new Raiders starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo "is expected to be ready long before the start of training camp." 

Garoppolo put pen to paper on a three-year contract that reportedly could be worth up to $72.5M with $33.75M guaranteed at signing early into the offseason, but it was recently learned the 31-year-old underwent surgery in March to address an issue with the foot he injured while with the San Francisco 49ers this past December. 

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported on May 27 that the Raiders essentially can void Garoppolo's contract if he's unable to pass a physical. However, head coach Josh McDaniels made it known last week he had "no anxiety" regarding Jimmy G's status. 

As for Brady, he is set to become a limited partner of the Raiders and potentially could've served as both a part-owner of the organization and an active quarterback as long as he received the necessary approval from league owners. The 45-year-old seemingly put an end to such chatter, though, when he completed a media tour last week and repeatedly insisted he's committed to staying retired. 

Garoppolo's lengthy and concerning injury history combined with Brady's competitive nature suggest whispers about the seven-time Super Bowl champion possibly featuring for Las Vegas later this year will continue until Jimmy G is spotted resuming normal football-related activities. On Monday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated acknowledged that "those who know Brady best have always wondered ... how he’d fill the competitive void that football would leave."

Even if Brady feels he has to scratch a particular itch at some point between training camp practices and the holiday season, it appears he will have to do so as a retired signal-caller unless Garoppolo goes down with another campaign-ending setback.
