Did the Las Vegas Raiders signal they want to move wide receiver Hunter Renfrow after barely using him in Week 1?
Per ESPN's Paul Gutierrez, Renfrow received zero targets for the first time in his five-year career during a 17-16 victory against the Denver Broncos, and he only logged 13 offensive snaps, which tied a career low.
Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels indicated Renfrow's low usage wasn't intentional.
"One of those where the game played out a certain way, and the coverage dictated that the ball went elsewhere," he said in a Monday news conference. "So that's what that is."
However, it's fair to wonder if McDaniels is bluffing. This offseason, teams were reportedly keeping tabs on the 27-year-old. The organization made significant roster changes, such as trading former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller to the New York Giants, indicating change is on the table.
After Renfrow caught a career-low 36 receptions in 2022, Las Vegas signed WR Jakobi Meyers, a potential replacement, to a three-year, $33M deal. He shined against Denver, hauling in nine receptions for a team-high 81 receiving yards and two TDs.
Nonetheless, the Raiders must increase Renfrow's role against the Bills in Week 2. On Monday, the team placed Meyers in concussion protocol after he took a massive hit in the fourth quarter against Denver and exited the game.
Regardless, don't be surprised if the Raiders move on from the former Pro Bowler. Per Spotrac, his contract contains a potential out in 2024; releasing him only incurs $5.5M in dead cap. Yet they should see if he attracts potential trade suitors before releasing him, as some teams might covet the experienced slot WR.
