The Atlanta Falcons' selection of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft was shocking and historic.

The Detroit Lions picked quarterback Joey Harrington eighth overall in 2002, wide receiver Charles Rogers second overall in 2003 and wideout Roy Williams seventh overall in 2004.
Harrington and Rogers were busts. The former registered 60 touchdown passes, 62 interceptions, and a 68.1 passer rating across four seasons in Detroit, while the latter played just 15 games across three seasons with the franchise before exiting the league due to injuries and off-the-field problems. Williams spent four-plus seasons with the Lions before being traded to the Dallas Cowboys, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2006.
The then-Oakland Raiders chose signal-caller JaMarcus Russell first overall in 2007, running back Darren McFadden fourth overall in 2008 and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey seventh overall in 2009.
Russell went down as one of the biggest draft busts in league history, lasting just three seasons, McFadden spent seven mediocre seasons with the organization, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards only once and Heyward-Bey played just four years in Oakland before moving on.
The Falcons selected tight end Kyle Pitts with the fourth overall pick in 2021. He was a Pro Bowler during his rookie campaign. After being limited to 10 games in 2022, he played in all 17 games during the 2023 campaign but finished with only 53 receptions for 667 yards and three touchdowns on 90 targets.
Atlanta drafted wide receiver Drake London with the No. 8 pick in 2022, ushering in the post-Matt Ryan era. London has been solid but not top-10 pick-worthy thus far, racking up 141 catches for 1,771 and just six touchdowns across his first two seasons.
Bijan Robinson was the eighth overall pick in 2023 and showed his versatility as a rookie, posting a pair of 100-yard rushing games last season and going over the century mark in yards from scrimmage on four other occasions. His usage was questionable at times though, as he went over 20 carries once in 17 games and only had 15 rushing attempts in a game five times during the campaign.
Robinson finished the year with 976 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 214 carries, adding 58 receptions for 487 receiving yards and four scores through the air.
