The Carolina Hurricanes had already set a franchise record for the fastest two goals in a playoff game, so what better way to advance to the second round than to improve on that mark by a second.
Jack Drury and Stefan Noesen scored eight seconds apart early in the third period to break a tie and send the Hurricanes to a 6-3 win to eliminate the New York Islanders in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series on Tuesday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.
Carolina will face the New York Rangers in the second round. The Rangers swept the Washington Capitals in the first round.
The Hurricanes' Sebastian Aho and Jordan Martinook scored nine seconds apart late in the third period in Game 2 of the series to wipe out a deficit in a 5-3 win.
Seth Jarvis had a goal and an assist and Evgeny Kuznetzov had a penalty-shot goal and an assist, while Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for Carolina.
Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist and Mike Reilly and Casey Cizikas added goals for the Islanders.
