Giants' Daniel Jones addresses team's reported interest in drafting a QB

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones spoke with reporters at an event on Wednesday night and was asked about the club's much-reported predraft interest in North Carolina signal-caller Drake Maye. 

"I’m focused on what I can control and that is preparing to play good football," Jones responded, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic. "So, getting healthy and I’ll be ready to go." 

Multiple individuals have said that the Giants wanted Maye but weren't willing to make the New England Patriots a so-called "Godfather offer" to move up in the draft order from pick No. 6 to No. 3. New England left the first round with Maye, and the Giants ultimately took LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers. 

It's believed the Giants could escape Jones' contract next offseason because of concerns related to his injury history. He's dealt with two neck issues since the fall of 2021, and he went down with a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5.

"I’m in a good spot," Jones said about his recovery from his latest setback. "I’ll be ready to go for training camp."

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network suggested that backup Drew Lock could win the starting job from Jones this summer. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo both seemed to pour cold water over that idea. 

"While you can only show so much in the spring, the fact that the New York Giants didn’t draft a quarterback will afford Lock starter reps through all the noncontact practices in May and June," Breer wrote for his latest mailbag. "If he makes an impression, and Jones stumbles in training camp, could things turn at some point in August? I wouldn’t bet on that happening, but I wouldn’t rule it out."

Meanwhile, Garafolo insisted during an on-air segment that "if Daniel Jones is healthy -- and [the Giants] do hope and expect that he is going to be healthy in Week 1, he is going to be the quarterback for the team." 

Beyond that, Jones seemingly could be shut down at any point in the fall so that the Giants are able to move on from him next March.
