Patriots HC Jerod Mayo open to a reunion with Tom Brady

Though he hasn’t played a down since the end of the 2022 season, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady keeps teasing that an NFL comeback isn’t completely off the table.

Brady admitted a few weeks ago on the “Deep Cut” podcast that if he did play again, he would be open to rejoining the New England Patriots, the team he spent 20 years with and led to six Super Bowl championships.

During a recent appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” Patriots first-year head coach Jerod Mayo stated he would consider a reunion with Brady – but as a coach and not a player.

“I love Tom, and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo said. “But as far as going on the field, I don’t know. But if he comes in here, once again, going back to the ‘Hey, the best player will play,’ you’ve got to come in here in compete, and he loves competition. I doubt he’s going to be walking through these doors any time soon.”

Brady will actually return to Foxborough on June 12 to be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Brady retired following the 2022 season, a season in which he went 8-9 as the Bucs starter – his only losing season in the NFL and just the second time in his 23-year career he won fewer than 10 games.

Brady is awaiting NFL approval of his minority ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders, a partnership that would prevent him from playing again unless he received approval from three-fourths of the other owners to play for a franchise while having a minority ownership stake.

Even if Brady was serious about returning to the field, the Patriots are pretty well set at the QB position after signing Jacoby Brissett to a one-year, $8 million contract during free agency and then drafting North Carolina’s Drake Maye No. 3 overall and Tennessee’s Joe Milton in the sixth round.
