After trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans last month and losing Gabriel Davis to free agency in March, many expected the Buffalo Bills to take multiple wide receivers during the 2024 NFL Draft.
After taking Florida State wideout Keon Coleman with their first of their 10 picks, the Bills took four more offensive players, three of whom were on the offensive line (center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, tackle Tylan Grable, guard Travis Clayton), but not another WR.
While a depth chart that reads Coleman, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, Mack Hollins and K.J. Hamler is significantly better than what Buffalo had after the first wave of free agency, perhaps a reunion with former leading receiver Zay Jones would ease the minds of fans who are worried quarterback Josh Allen doesn’t have enough weapons to throw to.
Jones, 29, was released two days ago by the Jacksonville Jaguars after they used their 2024 first-round pick on LSU receiver Brian Thomas Jr. He spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Bills from 2017 to 2019, leading them in receptions (56), targets (102), yards (652) and touchdowns (seven) during Allen’s rookie year in 2018.

It will also be interesting to see where Zay Jones now lands, as I think he still has something left to offer in the NFL
Back to the Bills, where he began his NFL career, to play alongside Keon Coleman? https://t.co/SxdVispbg5
Adding Jones would not only give Allen a weapon he’s already familiar with, but also provide another veteran presence to take some pressure off Coleman to produce immediately as a rookie.
Unless he gives Buffalo a tremendous hometown discount, the team can’t sign Jones, who earned $8M per year on his last contract, with its current limited cap space (slightly north of $2.8 million). However, the Bills will have an extra $10.2M on June 1 once Tre’Davious White’s release becomes official (he was designated a post-June 1 cut).
It’s possible Jones could agree to terms with the Bills and then wait until White’s money is off the books to officially sign.
