Three offseason moves the Chiefs must make
The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off their third Super Bowl win in five years and addressed their most important needs in the NFL Draft and free agency.
However, to become the first team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era, K.C. should keep improving its roster. With that in mind, here are three more moves the Chiefs must make this offseason.
Sign cornerback Stephon Gilmore
The Chiefs dealt cornerback L'Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans in March, leaving a hole in their secondary. In 16 games last season, Sneed allowed zero passing touchdowns and a 56.2 passer rating in coverage.
Sneed's backup, Joshua Williams, has yet to show he's a viable replacement. He has started in six games in two seasons and allowed seven passing TDs. The Chiefs drafted Tennessee CB Kamal Hadden (pick No. 211), who had three interceptions in seven games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023.
While the Chiefs still have first-team All-Pro corner Trent McDuffie, that shouldn't prevent them from signing former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore. In 17 games with the Dallas Cowboys last season, the five-time Pro Bowler had 13 passes defended and two interceptions.
Sign offensive tackle David Bakhtiari
Protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes is paramount for the Chiefs. They struggled to do this last season. Per Pro Football Reference, Kansas City allowed the league's fourth-most pressures (164).
The Chiefs haven't re-signed left tackle Donovan Smith — who started in 12 games in 2023 — and may have drafted BYU OT Kingsley Suamataia (pick No. 63) as a potential replacement. The Athletic's Dane Brugler noted Suamataia "[requires] a patient coaching staff who can ease his transition to the pro level."
Although David Bakhitari missed 16 games with a knee injury last season, he seems like a better option for the Chiefs. In 11 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, the 32-year-old earned two first-team All-Pro nods and made three Pro Bowls.
Sign wide receiver Tyler Boyd
The Chiefs signed former first-round WR Marquise Brown (one year, $7M deal) in free agency. They also drafted Xavier Worthy, who broke the 40-yard dash record (4.21) at the NFL Scouting Combine. Still, adding one more veteran pass-catcher certainly wouldn't hurt K.C.
Last season, the Chiefs wideouts seemed to suffer from a case of butterfingers. Per Pro Football Reference, the unit posted the league's highest drop rate (6.9 percent). Consequently, Mahomes logged an above-average 92.6 passer rating, the second-lowest mark of his career.
It's a surprise Tyler Boyd remains unsigned. In eight seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, the 29-year-old tallied 513 receptions for 6,000 yards and 31 TD catches. Clearly, he would bolster the Chiefs passing attack.
