Eagles rate good to great in latest power rankings

The Philadelphia Eagles have been working hard after a historic collapse to end their 2024 season. According to the latest batch of power rankings, so far so good. Here’s where NFL experts rank the team.

Bleacher Report (Gary Davenport): No. 11

Putting Philadelphia outside the top-10 won’t sit well among Eagles fans. With input from fellow analysts Maurice Moton and Brent Sobleski, Davenport commends the team’s strong draft class and free agent signings but puts a heavy burden on the team’s new coordinators.

"If head coach Nick Sirianni made better decisions in hiring coordinators (Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio), the Eagles should bounce back from an abysmal finish to the 2023 season."

Moore comes to Philadelphia after five years as a coach with the Dallas Cowboys and one year as offensive coordinator with the Chargers. Fangio was let go after one season as the Dolphins defensive coordinator but was a consultant with the Eagles during their Super Bowl run in 2022 and was head coach of the Denver Broncos from 2019-2021.

USA Today (Nate Davis): No. 6

Is Davis high on the Eagles or down on their division rivals? He’s fond of the team’s new cornerbacks but less impressed with the Cowboys’ offseason.

“Getting DBs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean with its first two draft picks should remedy what truly ailed Philly during 2023's late-season collapse...though relative inactivity from the reigning NFC East champion Cowboys sure doesn't appear to hurt.”

Mitchell was the first defensive back off the board before the team traded up for DeJean in the second round. Meanwhile, the Cowboys took a talented but raw offensive tackle in Tyler Guyton with their first-round pick and hope to get by with Ezekiel Elliott as their lead back in 2024.

NFL.com (Eric Edholm): No. 5

While noting the importance of landing players like Mitchell and DeJean, Edholm seems more impressed with the rest of Philadelphia’s draft.

“For good measure, they also took their usual approach to the remainder of the proceedings, mixing in a couple of interesting, unusual project picks (edge Jalyx Hunt and WR Johnny Wilson) with some rock-solid selections (RB Will Shipley, LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr., OG Trevor Keegan) to round out a typically impressive draft haul.”

Hunt is a lightning-quick safety and Wilson is a 6-foot-7, 237-pound freak of nature that so far has resisted a move to tight end. Shipley should be a nice compliment to running back Saquon Barkley while Trotter and Keegan will mix in throughout the season.

Fox Sports (David Helman): No. 2

Nobody’s higher on Philadelphia than Helman who puts them one spot ahead of the NFC champion 49ers, a five-spot jump from his previous rankings.

“Clearly, last season's collapse left a sour taste in Howie Roseman's mouth. The Eagles general manager has pulled every lever this offseason. The Birds added Saquon Barkley to an already-amazing offense, and they replenished the defensive depth chart with signings like Bryce Huff and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. No excuses in Philly if Jalen Hurts & Co. can't improve on last year's lousy finish.”

He’s not wrong. Huff had a career-best 10 sacks last season but needs to live up to a three-year, $51M contract. Gardner-Johnson had six interceptions in 12 games for the team in 2022 and returns after missing 14 games for the Lions last season.

Of course, if things don’t work out, the sour taste will rest with Philly fans who surely will call for head coach Nick Sirianni’s head.
