Three offseason moves the Chargers must make

The Los Angeles Chargers crumpled last season, missing the playoffs and finishing 5-12. This offseason, they hired new head coach Jim Harbaugh to turn things around, but he still faces a challenging rebuild.

Los Angeles should consider more roster tweaks to make Harbaugh's life easier. Here are three moves the Chargers must make.

Sign defensive lineman Calais Campbell

The 37-year-old Campbell remains productive, even though he's near the end of his career. In 17 games with the Atlanta Falcons last season, Campbell logged seven sacks, 25 hurries and 42 pressures, per Pro Football Focus.

Los Angeles DE Morgan Fox should retain his starting job after finishing with five sacks and 37 pressures in 17 games last season. In the draft, the Chargers took DE Justin Eboigbe (pick No. 105), a one-year starter at Alabama. They also signed DT Poona Ford (one year, $2.25M), who had one sack in eight games with the Buffalo Bills last season.

Signing one more D-lineman seems wise. Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowler, would provide the experience and depth the Chargers need.

Sign cornerback Xavien Howard

A foot injury limited the former Miami Dolphins star to 13 games last season, but doctors recently cleared him for football activities, via NFL Media insider Tom Pelissero.

If he stays healthy next season, Howard could quickly rebound. In eight seasons with the Dolphins, the 30-year-old made four Pro Bowls and recorded 29 interceptions and 60 pass breakups.

The Chargers signed CB Kristian Fulton to a one-year, $3.13M deal in free agency. However, adding another talented defensive back wouldn't hurt, especially after Los Angeles finished 30th in the league in passing yards allowed (249.8) last season.

Trade for wide receiver Treylon Burks

On Tuesday, the Tennessee Titans signed former Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5M, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. This raises more questions about Burks' future. The Titans also signed WR Calvin Ridley to a four-year, $92M deal in March.

On Monday, the Chargers signed former Pro Bowl WR DJ Chark Jr to a one-year, $5M deal. In 17 games with the Carolina Panthers last season, he amassed 35 receptions for 525 yards and five TD catches. In the draft, L.A. selected Georgia WR Ladd McConkey (pick No. 34), a two-time national champion.

Still, the Chargers should consider trading for former first-rounder Burks. In his first two seasons with the Titans, he recorded 49 receptions for 665 yards and one TD catch. He could generate better numbers with an elite QB like Los Angeles' Justin Herbert.
