The news Sharks coach has a long road ahead

Of the many storylines heading into the offseason for teams that failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the San Jose Sharks’ search for a new head coach will be intriguing.

On Wednesday, the team fired David Quinn as its bench boss after just two seasons on the job. The Sharks finished near the basement of the Western Conference in both campaigns, finishing with a league-worst 19 wins in the 2023-24 season.

General manager Mike Grier will have to be patient with whomever he hires. With a team that has a mix of young players and a plethora of talented prospects on the horizon, there is some optimism for the franchise’s future. That said, it will take time before San Jose is anywhere near competing for a playoff spot.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the bumpy road that sits before the future coach of the San Jose Sharks.

Frank Seravalli: This is a bullet spent by Mike Grier. You become the GM of a team, you get to hire your coach…So you bring in David Quinn. Did David Quinn become a bad coach in two years, or does he have a really bad team in front of him?

If you’re Mike Grier, you’ve put the target on your back, because you had an opportunity to choose the coach. You got it wrong, and now two seasons in, of what may be a 10-year process, you’re now having to start over again in the coaching department.

Tyler Yaremchuk: That roster’s not magically going to get better this summer. There’s a lot of good coaching candidates…none of those guys are taking a job in San Jose.

Frank: Why would you? You’re signing up for years of pain.
