Islanders sign goaltender Marcus Högberg to two-year contract

The news comes one week after Högberg announced he was leaving the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) club Linköping HC in a surprising move. Högberg’s contract had him there until 2028, however that has changed.

The 29-year-old put up a 21-18-0 record and a .914 save percentage through 40 starts during the 2023-24 regular season. In his three seasons since returning to Linköping, Högberg has compiled a 69-63-0 record.

“Of course, it feels great to get this chance again. I wasn’t really prepared for something like this to turn up, but I’m very happy and excited to test my wings on the world’s elite again,” said Marcus Högberg on the LHC website.

The Örebro, Sweden product was originally selected No. 78 overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. Högberg made his American Hockey League (AHL) debut in 2016-17 with the Binghamton Senators. He found a full-time role the next season with the now Belleville Senators and spent time in the ECHL with the Brampton Beast.

Högberg made his first NHL start in 2018-19 with Ottawa and in four appearances was held winless. It turned around for Högberg when he compiled a 21-11-10 record with Belleville and seemed to have found his game. However Högberg’s time with the Senators organization came to an end in 2020-21, he had 14 appearances with Ottawa, going 4-7-0.
