Two of the Miami Dolphins’ most important front-seven defenders are aiming to make comeback bids in 2024, but their availability and effectiveness is arguably the biggest question facing the franchise going into this upcoming season.
With Bradley Chubb and Jaelen Phillips working their way back from season-ending injuries suffered during the 2023 season, CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan suggests the uncertainty surrounding their return to action is the biggest question facing the franchise in 2024.
“The Dolphins were demolished by injuries last season,” Sullivan writes. “Specifically off the edge with both Chubb and Phillips going down. Now, it begs the question of when both of these stars will be ready to get back onto the field. Chubb tore his ACL in Week 17, while Phillips suffered an Achilles injury in Week 12. Those are both late-season injuries, so it’ll be worth monitoring their statuses when training camp opens up. The club did draft Chop Robinson in the first round last week, but not having either of them in the fold for a good portion of the year would be a significant blow.”
Chubb came one sack shy of matching a career-high 12 last season, while Phillips added 6.5, which places significant pressure on Robinson and the rest of the Dolphins stable of rushers to pick up the slack, especially early in the season.
Chop Robinson was one of the most explosive pass rushers in this year’s draft class.
“Edge defender who offers the type of elite athleticism we’ve seen from players like Micah Parsons,” NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein wrote of Robinson prior to the draft. “And Myles Garrett. Robinson might not be as fast as Parsons, but he’s close. He’s ultra-twitchy with the explosiveness to get on top of blockers and overwhelm them in an instant.”
While production never quite materialized for Robinson at Penn State, where he finished with just 9.5 sacks across two seasons in Happy Valley, his athleticism give him the chance along an NFL defensive line to develop into a disruptive force.
