Since being selected as the second overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2022 MLB Draft, Druw Jones has endured a tumultuous start to his professional career.
Shortly after the excitement of draft day, Jones suffered a shoulder injury that necessitated surgery and sidelined him for nearly a year. This surgery was the first in a series of setbacks, as recurring injuries over the next eighteen months frequently landed him on the 15-day injured list.
These interruptions prevented him from gaining traction and climbing the ranks within the Diamondbacks’ minor league system.
However, for the first time since his draft, Jones is beginning to show signs of a turnaround with the Visalia Rawhide in Single-A. After a challenging start to the season, where he struck out in 21 of his first 31 plate appearances and posted a mere .129 batting average, Jones has significantly improved. He has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, raising his average to .260.
Despite his early struggles, the Diamondbacks’ management has remained confident in Jones. Ranked as Arizona’s third-best prospect and 69th overall, he was declared “untouchable” by general manager Mike Hazen last year. Originally drafted out of high school, Jones has now played a total of 50 games in Single-A.
