Despite a disappointing 2023-24 NBA season and a first-round playoff sweep, the Phoenix Suns may not be ready to fire head coach Frank Vogel.
According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the team is considering a staff overhaul around Vogel instead.
Vogel’s job security came into question after a Game 3 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reporting “increasing belief” that his job was “in peril.” However, Vogel expressed confidence in his status, citing “full support” from owner Mat Ishbia.
The Suns’ 49-23 record in Vogel’s first season was marred by roster issues, including a lack of quality depth behind stars Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Rebuilding the supporting cast won’t be easy, especially with Booker and Beal unlikely to be traded due to their contracts and importance to the team.
Durant, 35, is the most viable trade option, but his scoring prowess and contract make it unlikely the Suns would get a suitable package in return. The trio’s combined $150.6 million salary next season adds to the challenge of building a quality supporting cast.
General manager James Jones faces configuring the roster, but the question remains whether Vogel is the right coach to lead the team next season. Vogel’s coaching style and ability to adapt to the team’s roster changes will be scrutinized.
The Suns’ playoff exit highlighted the need for a more balanced roster and a coach who can maximize the team’s potential. While Vogel’s job security is uncertain, it’s clear that changes are needed to propel the team forward.
The Suns’ decision on Vogel’s future will significantly affect the team’s trajectory. If they choose to retain him, they must surround him with a revamped staff and roster to better support the team’s stars.
If they decide to move on, they must find a coach who can unlock the team’s full potential. Either way, the Suns face a critical offseason shaping their future success.
