REPORT: Dominic Thiem Plans To Retire In Vienna This October

Dominic Thiem’s struggles since winning the 2020 US Open have been clear. He has been troubled by injuries and poor form, which he has spoken openly about.

Despite this, the 30-year-old seemed set on continuing to play and attempting to rediscover some of the majestic tennis that endeared him to so many tennis fans around the world. But shock reports indicate that the Austrian’s career is going to end much sooner than most expected.

Dominic Thiem Plans To Retire In Vienna This October

Jose Morgado, citing Austrian media, has reported that Thiem is set to retire in October of this year. Unsurprisingly, he wants to do this on home soil in Vienna. Thiem has already told his sponsors about his decision.

This is a stunning turn of events less than four years after his incredible triumph at Flushing Meadows, where he defeated Alexander Zverev from two sets down to lift the trophy. He has achieved much more than that as well. Thiem reached the French Open final in 2018 and 2019, which he lost on both occasions to Rafael Nadal. This was followed by playing an epic Australian Open final against Novak Djokovic in 2020, being narrowly defeated in five sets.

Thiem’s other accomplishments include being the runner-up at the 2019 and 2020 ATP Finals and overcoming Roger Federer in the 2019 Indian Wells Open final. Those feats led to the 17-time ATP titlist peaking at No. 3 in the rankings in March 2020.

Sadly, Thiem has never been the same since sustaining some injuries in 2021. The first of these was a knee injury, but the most serious was a wrist injury, which he picked up at the Mallorca Open in June 2021. That problem kept him away from the sport until the 2022 clay-court season. Unfortunately, the Austrian’s level never returned to its previous level.

Nonetheless, Thiem’s achievements in the sport are still exceptional. He deserves to a major send-off if he does go through with retiring from the sport in October.
