Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa to take part in Seattle Seahawks’ rookie camp

Taulia Tagovailoa went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft after five collegiate seasons. However, while he didn’t get his name called over the course of the past few days, he has since learned where his first professional opportunity will be coming.

Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, Tagovailoa will be heading to Seattle. He will go there to compete as part of the Seahawk’s rookie camp this next weekend.

“Former Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa will participate in the #Seahawks’ rookie camp this coming weekend, source says,” Garafolo wrote on Twitter. “Seattle is currently carrying three QBs on the roster, including Chevon Cordeiro, who signed as an undrafted free agent from San Jose State.”

Tagovailoa, the brother of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, was not one of the 11 quarterbacks in this year’s draft. Not many were options following the first dozen picks, though, with only five coming off the board after six went from No. 1 to No. 12 in the first round. Still, he is now the latest to get his chance as a free agent following the final pick on Saturday.

Tagovailoa just finished a half decade in college. He shared one at Alabama with his brother before transferring and going to Maryland for the remaining four. During that career overall, he threw for 11,356 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions on a 67.1% completion rate.

Essentially all of that came while with the Terps as three-time 3,000-yard passer while in College Park. His best year came as a redshirt sophomore back in 2021. As a redshirt senior this past fall, he posted 3,377 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 picks on 66.4% completion.

That all led him to being an all-time passer both in program history as well as in the Big Ten.

As Garafolo pointed out, Tagovailoa would be the fourth quarterback in play in Seattle. The Seahawks already had Geno Smith, who has had a career revival on the team the last two years. Sam Howell has since joined this offseason after they made a trade with Washington for him back in March. Then, after making eight picks in the draft, they signed double-digit undrafted prospects. That included Chevon Cordeiro out of San José State, a sixth-year quarterback with the Spartans as well as Hawaii.

Tagovailoa likely just wanted some shot or another by the end of this weekend. He’ll now get to take one in Seattle with a chance in front of him to take the field with them in the coming days.
