Devils Sign Top Prospect to Entry-Level Contract
Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

New Jersey Devils top prospect defenseman, Seamus Casey, signed his first NHL deal on Monday morning.

The Devils inked Casey to a three year, entry-level contract.

Casey joins Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec as some of the rising defensemen in the Devils’ system.

After Casey’s Michigan Wolverines were blanked by Boston College in the semifinal of the NCAA’s Frozen Four, the Devils’ top prospect was free to sign a deal with New Jersey, making the leap to the professional level.

Casey had an excellent sophomore season with Michigan accruing seven goals and 38 assists for 45 points in 40 games this year.

Unlike some of his Michigan teammates, Seamus Casey didn’t put pen to paper right away. The prospect defenseman watched 2023-24 Wolverines such as Frank Nazar, Gavin Brindly, and Dylan Duke all opt for professional hockey and thus, made his decision to follow suit.

Winnipeg Jets forward prospect Rutger McGroarty opted to return to Michigan among the skaters eligible to sign their entry-level contracts.

The Devils prospect blue-liner has nothing left to prove at the college level, and thus, is beginning his professional hockey career.

Casey will attend Devils training camp in September and battle for a spot on the 2024-25 roster, otherwise he will play in the American Hockey League with the Utica Comets.

According to the press release, “Born on January 8, 2004, Casey was New Jersey’s second-round selection, 46th overall, in the 2022 NHL Draft. He played for the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) from 2020-21 to 2021-22 where was also teammates with Hughes as well as New Jersey prospect Nick Leddy. Casey represented the United States at the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) 2021-22 U18 World Junior Championship (WJC) and 2023-24 WJC. He earned a Silver Medal at the 2022 tournament and Gold in 2024.”
