NFL Draft decision made by Browns could lead to undrafted free agent making the team
Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Cleveland Browns went into the 2024 NFL Draft with multiple areas of the roster needing to be addressed. While they addressed some, there were some surprises.

The Browns let tight end Harrison Bryant walk as a free agent and he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Cleveland did bring a full back/blocking tight end in Giovanni Ricci but still could use another true tight end.

Perhaps Cleveland knew they could add that guy as an undrafted free agent.

TE Treyton Welch may have walked into an ideal situation

The Browns decided to sign one tight end that was not drafted and that is Welch out of Wyoming. With the situation that Welch is walking into, he very well could be a candidate to make the team. Out of the undrafted free agents that the Browns picked up, I believe he has the best chance.

Welch had 308 yards receiving each of the last two seasons with Wyoming and has played in 43 career games over his four total seasons there. Welch had nine touchdowns in his college career and five came in his junior season alone.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and about 240 pounds, Welch is not great at either pass catching or blocking. He isn’t a very good route runner, instead, he is too stiff and has had to make tough catches a lot on tape.

Making tough catches is where Welch has been able to stand out a bit, as he has no problem catching the ball away from his body in traffic.

Multiple tight ends are going to have a chance to crack the roster for Cleveland and Welch is going to be in the mix.
