Shakur Tells Tank Davis To Come See Him – ‘Tired Of Talking, Stop Ducking’
Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Shakur Stevenson called out Gervonta Davis, telling him to stop ducking.

Davis, the WBA Lightweight Champion, defends his title against Frank Martin on June 15. It is a battle of two undefeated fighters, with Davis leading the odds as the favorite. There are questions over how Davis will look since Martin is a southpaw, known for having a good defense.

It is also Davis’ first fight since his win over Ryan Garcia last year where he stopped King Ry with a body shot in round seven. His stardom suffered somewhat after Davis was arrested for breaking the terms of his house arrest over a hit-and-run. That meant Davis served 44 days in jail before he was released. If Davis gets past Martin, Shakur wanted Tank to see him next.

Stevenson On Davis

“Your beef is not with Floyd Mayweather. There’s a fighter out here who wants to fight you. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, let’s make the fight happen. I’ve been Tweeting, and I’m tired of talking about it. Stop ducking me, and let’s make the fight happen. Come on,” Shakur said

Shakur has one fight left on his Top Rank deal, leaving him open to free agency. Shakur is the WBC Lightweight Champion, a belt he acquired after beating Edwin De Los Santos in his last fight. The performance was criticized as Shakur was boxing off the back foot, earning him boos from the crowd. At the same time, Shakur admitted to having a hand injury coming into the fight, which did not win him any favours from the boxing public.

Shakur is expected to box again on July 6. He has been linked with fighting Artem Harutyunyan, although no official announcement has been made. But given Shakur’s desire to become undisputed at 135, he must get past Davis on his way to becoming that. Tank has been accused of not facing the best fighters in his weight class.

Stevenson vs Davis

Fights against Shakur, Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, and Teofimo Lopez have never happened, even when they were lightweight. While Davis beat Ryan Garcia, the boxer had to fight at a catchweight of 136 pounds, including a ten-pound rehydration clause. That left Garcia depleted, taking the shine of Davis’ win. This is particularly true since Garcia dramatically beat Haney, dropping him three times on his way to a majority decision win. But if Shakur does face Davis, Paulie Malignaggi picked Shakur to win.

“This guy is the best pure boxer in the sport, no one can touch him, no one can beat him, including elite level guys. Shakur Stevenson would beat Gervonta Davis and he’d make it look pretty easy. I’ll tell you what, Gervonta’s power is always a wild card, but Shakur Stevenson is way too good. Shakur is the most effective fighter in the sport. It wasn’t exciting against De Los Santos, he still dominated a dangerous guy, a guy who’s a dangerous puncher, it doesn’t matter how exciting you think he was,” Malignaggi stated
