David Benavidez says Canelo Alvarez is scared to face him.
The Mexican Monster was ringside to see Alvarez win a comfortable unanimous decision win against Jaime Munguia. The victory meant Canelo kept his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title. Canelo was asked about his next move. The champion addressed Benavidez, saying he would fight him provided the money was right. Canelo has previously requested $150-200 million to make the fight.
The Saudis have shown a reluctance to put that money up, choosing instead to do so for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship bout for Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk. The only fight to have done anywhere near those numbers recently was when Floyd Mayweather faced Manny Pacquiao in 2015. The fight failed to live up to the hype as Mayweather won a unanimous decision. Pacman was no longer in his prime.
Benavidez has now gone up to 175 to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Belt. The Mexican Monster has said he will return to 168 for Canelo. But will Benavidez be the same fighter, given he is already too big for 168? That has created the narrative that Canelo is trying to avoid Benavidez.
“Nobody’s going to give 200 million for that. If somebody can come up to 200 million we make a go fund account maybe we’ll get it, but as of right now, nobody’s giving 200 million for that fight. I think he’s getting put into a corner now where he’s running out of excuses. He said the only thing I bring is 25 extra pounds and I’m not worth nothing, but he’s asking for 200 million,” Benavidez said
Nevertheless, the WBC could take action. Benavidez has been a mandatory for over two years. The WBC has not stripped Canelo, nor have they called the mandatory. If Benavidez becomes mandatory for Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol at 175 by beating Gvozdyk, then the boxer and the WBC will have a decision to make. If Canelo had no belts it would not matter. He would not be holding up the division. But Canelo’s actions prevent genuine world title challenges, questioning the claim that he is the face of boxing. Benavidez was not happy with the way the WBC was acting.
“Definitely, I earned my right to campaign for the title. The WBC, I think it’s unfair that they’re only giving me ten days to decide if I’m staying at 175 or 168. I haven’t gotten the opportunity for three years, but we’ll make the decision [whether to return to 168] after the fight [against Gvozdyk]. But definitely, if we can make the fight happen, that’s a fight that we all want to see. I’m not ducking nobody.
“I see he’s going up to 175, so potentially we could have that fight. The only fight I’m staying around at 168 is for Canelo. I’m done at 168. If not for Canelo, I’m not going down to 168. I was there for ten years at the pinnacle to fight for all the belts, and they didn’t give me the opportunity. So now we’re moving up too 175. But definitely, that’s a very lucrative fight, me and David Morrell. He’s the best with PBC, so let’s make it happen,” Benavidez said
