Minnesota Twins Roster Moves 5/3

The Minnesota Twins head into play today sitting in fourth place in the American League Central two and a half games back from the division-leading Cleveland Guardians with a 17-13 record. The Twins just swept the Chicago White Sox in a three-game series to start the week. They will host the Boston Red Sox this weekend for a three-game series. Ahead of today’s game, they have announced two roster moves.

RHP – Adam Plutko

The Twins have signed free agent Adam Plutko to a minor league contract and assigned him to the Florida Complex League. Plutko has a career 14-14 record over 37 starts and 88 total games pitched. He has a career 5.39 ERA and a career WHIP of 1.38. His last appearance in the major leagues was with Baltimore in 2021. He had one start, 38 games pitched, a one-win, two-loss record, 6.71 ERA, 44 strikeouts, and a 1.63 WHIP. He chose to try free agency following the 2021 season and has yet to pitch again.

RHP – Jorge Alcala

The Twins recalled Alcala from the St. Paul Saints today ahead of the game. He has been pitching in Triple-A since April, 14th he has appeared in three games, throwing four innings without factoring into a decision. He has a 4.50 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP with St. Paul. He has appeared in six games for the Twins this season pitching 8.1 innings and earning one victory. He has a 0.00 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP when pitching for the Twins. He has allowed three hits, zero earned runs, three walks, and struck out nine in 8.1 innings of work.

Wrap Up:

The Twins signing of Plutko is an interesting one and since he hasn’t pitched in three seasons it will be interesting to see what he does in the Florida Complex League. I do like seeing them bring back Alcala who in his limited innings has been impressive for the Twins. The Twins are getting hot and having another solid option out of the bullpen would be crucial since they have their closer back in the mix with the return Jhoan Duran.
