The Cincinnati Reds entered today’s play with a 16-18 record good enough for third place in the NL Central behind the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. They start a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight and then head to San Francisco for a three-game weekend series with the Giants. Before today’s game, the Reds have announced several roster moves including getting back to key contributors to the big league club roster!
The Reds have placed Gibaut on the 60-day injured list. He has pitched in seven games in the minors with one loss on his record. In only six innings pitched, he has a 7.50 ERA and 2.17 WHIP. He has allowed seven hits, five earned runs, six walks, and ten walks.
The Reds activated Montas from the 15-day injured list today. He has a two-and-two record in three starts so far this year. He has pitched 19.1 innings, allowing 18 hits, nine earned runs, ten walks, 14 strikeouts, a 4.19 ERA, and a 1.45 WHIP on the year.
The Reds have activated Friedl from the 10-day injured list. He has yet to play in a regular-season game for the Reds, but he played four games in Triple-A. In 16 at-bats, he scored three runs, four hits, three doubles, two RBIs, two walks, and three strikeouts. While on his rehab assignment, he was slashing .250/.333/.438 with a .771 OPS.
The Reds have selected Capel’s contract from the Louisville Bats today ahead of their game. In 31 games, he has scored 18 runs, 26 hits, eight doubles, seven home runs, 16 RBIs, 20 walks, 21 strikeouts, and six stolen bases. He has slashed .268/.397/.567 with a .964 OPS in Triple-A.
The Reds have optioned Thompson to the Chattanooga Lookouts in Double-A. He has played in 17 games for the Reds, scoring five runs, two hits, one double, and 11 strikeouts. He has slashed .111/.111/.167 and a .278 OPS with the Reds.
Martini has been optioned to the Louisville Bats in Triple-A. He has played in 29 games for the Reds this season and has scored 13 runs, 14 hits, one double, one triple, three home runs, 15 RBIs, two walks, and 22 strikeouts. He is slashing .177/.200/.329 with a .529 OPS on the year.
Well, the wait is over TJ Friedl is back for the Reds after breaking his wrist in spring training diving for a ball. I am excited for his return to the lineup as he will add another threat to the lineup with his bat and legs. The return of Frankie Montas to the rotation is also a plus; he was pitching well before taking a trip to the Injured list. Martini slowed down big time after the first week of the season, and Bubba Thompson has done nothing so far, so they sent him straight to Double-A. Capel’s call-up is another interesting move, as he can play anywhere in the outfield, providing additional flexibility for manager David Bell. Could this mean that with Friedl and Capel, we will see Spencer Steer get some play at the hot corner?? These next six games will be necessary for the Reds as they could use to win both series to get them back on track and gain some ground on the two top teams in the division.
