Powerful May Blizzard Dumping Nearly 4 Feet At Utah Ski Resorts

According to Snowbird's 'Surf Report', the mountain recorded 10 inches overnight, 16 inches in the last 24 hours, and there's potential for an additional 20-34 inches to fall before tomorrow morning.

In celebration of the snow, Snowbird is adjusting their operation schedule for today, May 6th, and tomorrow May 7th. They're essentially reverting to winter ops to allow for avalanche mitigation work, and to give skiers more time on the fresh snow.

Check out the details below.

-Due to a significant winter storm, Snowbird is scheduled to operate for skiing & riding from 9 am - 3 pm on Monday, May 6, and Tuesday, May 7, with the Tram, Little Cloud, Peruvian Express, the Peruvian Tunnel and Mineral Basin Express, conditions permitting.

-Peruvian Express and the Peruvian Tunnel will be closed Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9, and are scheduled to reopen Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12, conditions permitting. 

Snowbird plans to remain open for skiing and riding through "at least through Memorial Day". A firm closing date has not been announced at this time. Safe to say that nearly four feet of new snow certainly won't hurt.

It's normal for a clipper storm to deposit a few inches of snow in May, but this blizzard is anything but normal. It's powerful, cold, and producing lots of snow. 

Snowbird's neighbor Alta Ski Area has closed for the season, but the still-open resorts in Big Cottonwood Canyon haven't been spared.

Brighton Resort is reporting 14 inches of overnight snowfall, and Solitude is reporting 12 inches. Check out fat flakes falling yesterday, May 5th at Brighton in front of their brand-new 'Meltdown' poster below. Tap to play.

The storm is expected to continue through today and tonight across the Wasatch. Will the storm set May snowfall records? That remains to be seen.
