After a promising playoff run this year, the Orlando Magic are entering the offseason with a lot of cap space to improve their roster. As it stands, they can attract Klay Thompson away from the bay to give their team a much-needed offensive boost.
During the 2022-23 season, the very first year Paolo Banchero played in the NBA, the Magic ended the regular season with a 34-48 record. With the 13th place in the Eastern Conference, many thought Orlando was still a couple years away before becoming a playoff team.
Last season, though, was a different story as the Banchero-led Magic surged through the East with a 47-35 record, which translated to a fifth-seed in the playoffs. While their 22nd-place offense needed some work, the team found their identity in playing good defense as they placed second out of 30 teams in that category.
Surprisingly, the Magic lasted a whole series against Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers. During those seven games, Orlando committed fewer turnovers, grabbed more offensive rebounds, and went to the free-throw line a lot better than the Cavs. Banchero was also phenomenal, as seen in his playoff averages of 27.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.1 steals per contest.
The Magic’s series against Cleveland exposed the team’s weakness on offense. In light of this, the front office is planning to pursue Thompson in the offseason, in a video shared by Run It Back on X:
“The Magic can open up an excess of sixty million dollars in cap space this off season…One name to keep an eye on, Klay Thompson, I’m told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson.”@ShamsCharania on the Magic’s future plans.

Although Thompson isn’t the same player he was a couple of years ago, the All-Star guard still offers a lot of advantages for a young Magic team. Apart from averaging 17.9 points on 38 percent shooting from beyond the arc, the Splash Brother’s experience and presence as a veteran can be invaluable for Orlando’s young squad.
Orlando will have to wait for the playoffs to end before any kind of move will take place. Nevertheless, the Magic will certainly turn heads if they get to sign Thompson for next season.
